Custom Shimo “Cloud” Concert Ukulele

Preowned. Circa. 2020. Custom Shimo Concert Ukulele by master luthier Takahiro Shimo of Tokyo, Japan. An incredible approach to 21st-century ukulele lutherie, Shimo continues to design elements into his builds that elevate his pieces into the category of functional art. His interest in finely handcrafted ukuleles and guitars culminated with his graduation in 1980 from the famed Robert-Venn School of Luthiery in Phoenix, Arizona. In 1981, Shimo began his journey as a new luthier at Morris Musical Instruments, where he handcrafted custom guitars for music stores throughout Japan. In 1982, Shimo opened his workshop where he has been handcrafting some of Japan’s most iconic and creative guitars and ukuleles. He is widely known for his whimsical body designs, offset soundholes, and bent headstocks, among other features, occasionally slipping in a more traditional body-shaped instrument into his build schedule for those looking for a more traditional look to their instrument.

This beautiful, simple, but elegant Shimo concert ‘cloud’ ukulele was handcrafted of a beautiful set of Pacific Northwestern Myrtle wood on the face, back, and sides of the instrument. The fingerboard and bridge were cut from a musician’s grade set of East-Indian rosewood with a Honduras mahogany wood neck. This piece was designed with a billowing upper and lower bout and an extended 16 fret joint to the body, affording the player easy reach into the higher positions on the neck. Asymmetrical headstock design, professional Gotoh geared tuners for precise and smooth tuning. The instrument also boasts a soft-to-the-touch satin finish, making the ukulele easy to cradle and allowing for a smooth glide of the hand in the higher positions on the neck.

Myrtle, one of North America’s most exotic woods, is widely known for possessing tonal qualities similar to Maple wood with a clear and bright tone and nice projection but slightly more round. This beautiful Custom Shimo ‘Cloud’ Concert Ukulele is characterized with an open, sweet and balanced sound.  Perfect for strumming and singing along or as an accompanying instrument.
