Custom Pohaku Concert Ukulele

New. Custom Pohaku Concert Ukulele, handcrafted by Peter Hurney in Astoria, Oregon. Hurney began making his first Pohaku Ukuleles in Kailua, Hawaii, in the early 1990s, then moved his workshop to Berkeley, California, where he worked for 20 years. Now, Pohaku is located in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. Peter creates a limited number of custom, one-of-a-kind instruments each year from Pohaku’s climate-controlled workshop and artist studio.

Pohaku ukuleles are crafted in a variety of styles, ranging from vintage classical to art deco, art nouveau, and modernist steampunk. Hurney’s dynamic and award-winning instruments have been played on numerous stages and featured in countless recordings. They have also been showcased in several galleries, museums, art books, and music magazines, and discussed in many music forums. These ukuleles are highly coveted by professional musicians worldwide.

This particular Custom Pohaku Concert Ukulele is made from Big Leaf Maple wood for the back, Claro Walnut for the sides, and Alaskan Yellow Spruce for the soundboard. The fingerboard is carved from a set of Macassar ebony, featuring reconstructed stone position markers at the 5th, 7th, 10th, and 12th positions. Matching Big Lead Maple wood neck. The instrument also includes a 13-fret joint to the body, a banjo-inspired headstock design, and a beautiful hula dancer inlaid into the headstock. Art deco design two-piece maple and ebony bridge, intricate rope top binding, and planetary tuners for smooth and precise tuning, all finished with high-gloss lacquer.

This ukulele offers wonderful tonal qualities, providing a perfect balance with crisp highs and deep, pronounced lows, along with spot-on intonation. Its deep body design and arched back not only give the instrument a unique aesthetic but also enhance its sound and projection. As a career luthier dedicated to achieving the best tone from each build, Hurney has created an instrument that is lightweight yet powerful. The sound is a joy to experience, featuring tremendous projection, sustain, and clarity. This ukulele is highly recommended for both professional musicians and recreational players alike. #260023
