2020. Custom Lone Tree ‘Hybrid’ Baritone Ukulele. Custom Lone Tree Ukuleles are handcrafted by master luthier Steve Doreen in Lake Cowichan, BC Canada. Luthier Steve Doreen, founder of Lone Tree Guitars & Ukuleles, lives and works in the Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island BC. With a focus on design innovation and great tone he builds a limited number of instruments per year but some of the most sought after full custom ukuleles out of Canada. Each piece is handcrafted with the utmost care and attention to detail, yielding both an aesthetically pleasing instrument with a remarkable sound.
Premium master grade Claro Walnut wood back and sides with a Sinker Redwood soundboard. Sinker Redwood is a tremendous tonewood and is characterized with a solid warm note core with balanced clarity. Claro Walnut is found in the Pacific Northwestern area of the United States and offers a round and balanced sound in the hands of a master luthier such as Steve. Gorgeous Hawaiian Koa wood top and back binding with matching Hawaiian Koa wood arm bevel for comfort when cradling the instrument. Spanish cedar asymmetrical neck design that comfortably sits in the palm of your hand adding more support for the wrist angle when playing. Radiused fretboard set at 12″ with fan frets for added relief on the wrist angle and ease of play in the higher positions on the neck. The zero fret is the parallel fret in keeping with the direction of the hands as it moves towards the body. Side position markers have been inlaid on the side of the fretboard for a top down perspective and quick reference. Macassar ebony fretboard and bridge. Side sound port for monitor like experience. Beautiful Hawaiian Koa wood rosette with Art Deco design for a subtle but elegant accent to the piece. Slotted headstock with Lone Tree logo inlaid from Maple wood on the headstock. Soft florentine cutaway design. Nitrocellulose high-gloss finish on the body with true oil finish on the neck for smooth play. Geared tuners for smooth and precise tuning.
This beautiful custom Lone Tree ‘hybrid’ baritone ukulele has a scale of 19 inches and can be tuned in traditional D G B E baritone tuning but it is also very sweet in the Bb tuning of F Bb D G, which is one full step below the standard tenor tuning of gCEA. The wonderful thing about the F Bb D G tuning is that you have the benefit of a nice mellow sound traditionally offered by a baritone ukulele without the floppiness of the strings, which is common on a D G B E set up. The result, a hybrid baritone that is easy to play, defined in its tonal character, and can be played just as you play your tenor as well. Excellent sustain and projection and a true joy to play. Tremendous sustain with warm, rich and complex tones. This instrument is warm and earthy with the overtone depth of rosewood and clarity comparable to mahogany. ID#200066
