1920s Harold Summers Tenor Ukulele

Circa late 1920s – 1930s (early) Harold Summers tenor ukulele by Sam Chang. One of many luthiers who worked for Aloha and Kumalae, Sam Chang was a builder who learned his craft through employment at the factory before building his own instruments out of his home around 1924. Over the years, Sam struck up a business partnershipership with musician Paul F. Summers and Harold Summers, transplants from the continental US who found made a career for themselves performing and teaching guitar and ukulele in Waikiki to would be visitors to the islands.

This wonderful historical tenor ukulele was likely handcrafted around the late 1920s or early 1930s out of Hawaiian Koa wood face, back, and sides. The neck, fretboard, and bridge also retain the traditional feel by also being hand-carved from Hawaiian Koa wood.  Simple white-black-white rosette and matching top binding for classic appeal. One small repair on the soundboard below the ‘A’ strong to the butt of the instrument.

Warm, rich, and full tones with a lot of projection, this is a rare example of an early tenor-sized ukulele made in Hawaii.  Excellent sustain and projection this instrument is perfect for both the player and collector. #250035
