This gorgeous DeVine baritone ukulele is handcrafted of a musician’s grade Carpathian spruce soundboard and a master grade Hawaii-grown Cuban Mahogany back and sides harvested from the King Kamehameha V Estate. The natural reddish-orange hues of this gorgeous set of old growth Cuban Mahogany adds to the overall elegant feel of this beautiful masterpiece. Solid Mahogany wood neck with graphite rod for added stability and increased sustain of the ukulele. Jet-black Gabon Ebony wood fingerboard and bridge and a matching Ebony wood top headstock plate. Rich dark curly Hawaiian Koa wood top and back binding with a matching bound fretboard for ease of play up and down the neck. Bone nut and saddle. Meticulous scroll inlay of orange opal gemstone on the fingerboard, bridge, and matching position markers have been inlaid on positions 3, 5, 7, 10, 12, 15, and 17 in keeping with the theme of the reddish-orange colors of the wood used from the King Kamehameha V Estate. Classic slotted headstock and natural mother-of-pearl ‘V’ or ‘DeVine’ logo with orange opal vine inlay. Elegant black-white pin-striped purfling on top, back, and sides and a side sound port for monitor-like effect and professional fine-tuned Waverly slotted headstock machine tuners for precise tuning and classic appeal. Nitrocellulose high-gloss finish. Gorgeous nouveau design rosette with orange opal inlay and matching opal soundboard purfling inlay – magnificently done. The opal has a gorgeous contrast against the milky hues of the Carpathian spruce. In contrast to paua shell which has a nice appeal, opal offers subtle reflections of light and at certain angles and has a slight sparkle and depth, giving it the initial ambiance of simple elegance yet with the pronounced shimmer of a fine diamond. There are two surface impressions adjacent to one another on the soundboard that can be seen only at certain angles under high-lighting.
Tonally, the Hawaii-grown Cuban Mahogany is a warm sweet tone and is highly sought after by woodworkers and instrument luthiers in Hawaii. This quality is extremely rare, offering fine pin curl that is all throughout the wood in addition to it being from the land of one of Hawaii’s former Kings – King Kamehameha V. Carpathian spruce, a European Spruce, is widely regarded for its excellent stiffness similar to that seen in Adirondack Red Spruce, while maintaining the lower density and lightness often seen in many of the traditional Euro Spruce varieties such as German, Swiss, and Italian spruce. This gives it an excellent stiffness-to-weight ratio and a powerful attack. A remarkable combination of beauty and tone. DeVine ukuleles have a tone all to themselves and this one has a buttery and rich, full, sound that is tremendously warm, and perfectly balanced. Remarkable clarity and sustain with perfectly set intonation as well. There is no compromise to the work that has been done and no expense spared of time or resources for the build. Beautiful aesthetics parallel the warm, rich and complex tones offered by this wonderful ukulele. One of the best in high-end custom ukuleles in the world, you’ll be very pleased with the craftsmanship and tones of a custom DeVine ukulele. ID#230127
