Custom Kawika Concert Ukulele

This beautiful custom Kawika ukulele was handcrafted with premium Hawaiian Koa back, & sides with douglas fir wood top. Ebony fretboard and bridge with black top binding. Honduras Mahogany neck. High gloss finish. Paua shell rosette and inlay on soundboard, fretboard position markers and bridge. This is a definite player uke and one of the finest pieces to have come through.
What can I say, Kawika ukuleles makes incredible ukes! I’ve owned 4-5 thus far and each one (redwood, koa or douglas fir tops) has its own aesthetic appeal in my opinion. But there are certainly consistent character traits in David’s building in terms of sound that really carries through on each piece.
The douglas fir top on this Kawika ukulele does make for a nice sounding piece. I’ve only come across a couple of other ukes built with a douglas fir soundboard and they were quite nice as well. Crisp, clean and precise. The uke also has exceptional volume but that could also be because of the savarez strings that the uke is laced up with as well. It’s not overpowering but it certainly has a “presence”about it. I also love the consistent off-yellow tinge throughout the soundboard that shows the natural aging of the wood. This Kawika was built back in June of 2000 and I believe it was the first (it’s hand-written on the label inside the soundhole) 14-fret concert ukes made by David.
The koa used on this Kawika ukulele is gorgeous and three-dimensional and the shell used on the soundboard and rosette is paua shell and the color is consistent all through out. In my opinion, it’s one heck of a player ukulele but as a slightly used piece it does have some fretwear and a couple of small pencil tip sized nicks on the side of the upper bout. The neck is dead straight and the action reasonable although I personally like the string action a little lower. It’s an easy adjustment for whoever picks up this beauty.
Kawika ukuleles has stopped building ukuleles for quite some time now but his ukuleles are amongst the most desired custom ukuleles around. Kawika ukuleles have a nice crisp, clean and precise tone with excellent balance & sustain. I don’t come across Kawika’s pieces very often, maybe once or twice a year at most and they usually don’t stick around very long as well.
