Custom ukuleles by Kawika Ukuleles. Beautiful Kawika Tenor Ukulele in original condition. This piece is tremendously rare and with David Hurd no longer accepting orders Kawika Ukuleles are amongst the best sounding, most desired and rare Hawaii-made player ukuleles around. Handcrafted on the ‘Big Island’ of Hawaii.
Kawika makes incredible ukes! I’ve owned a number of his pieces thus far and each one (redwood, koa, cedar, or douglas fir tops) has its own aesthetic appeal and tonal quality. But there are certainly consistent character traits in David’s building in terms of sound that really carries through on each piece.
Gorgeous Hawaiian Koa face, back, & sides. 20-fret ebony wood fingerboard with abalone dot inlays, ebony wood bridge, 14-fret jointed solid koa wood neck, graphite rod insert in neck for added stability and increased sustain, and a high gloss finish that illuminates the natural characteristics of the wood. Wonderful warm tones with crisp, clean and precise notes all the way up the neck. The uke also has exceptional volume and remarkable sustain. There is certainly a player’s – “presence” – about it.
The uke does have a slight dip on the soundboard below the soundhole and above the bridge but is very faint and structurally the instrument is fine. I’ve had it looked at by a local luthier and there is no movement on the bridge or the neck. Passive pick up has also been installed for quick plug-n-play feature.
Kawika has stopped building ukuleles for quite some time now but his ukuleles are amongst the most desired custom ukuleles around. Kawika ukuleles have a nice crisp, clean and precise tone with excellent balance & sustain. I don’t come across Kawika’s pieces very often, maybe once or twice a year at most and they usually don’t stick around very long as well.
