Over the years, they continue to be coveted by musicians worldwide. Each one (redwood, koa, cedar, or douglas fir tops) has its own aesthetic appeal and tonal quality. But there are certainly consistent character traits in David’s building in terms of sound that really carries through on each piece. This particular ukulele was handcrafted of gorgeous Hawaiian koa wood back and sides with a cedar wood top and ebony fingerboard and bridge. The top tortoise shell (faux) binding adds to the elegant and yet simple appeal to the instrument but also functions as a barrier of support against direct impacts to the top and side joint on the body. A 12-fret jointed solid koa wood neck, graphite rod insert in neck for added stability and increased sustain, and a high gloss finish that illuminates the natural characteristics of the wood. Subdued tones with a very nice warm sound. Excellent clarity with clean and precise tones that appeals to the most acute ears. There is certainly a player’s – “presence” – about it.
The instrument was previously owned by an established local musician who enjoys custom ukuleles and vintage guitars. Just can’t play them all so this one is up for adoption. There is a pick guard on the whole upper bout area and light strumming over the pick guard. Some button ‘rash’ on the back of the instrument from those sessions over the years up on stage and rubbing up against the top aloha shirt button. (See photos). It’s only cosmetic and nothing of great concern.
