1999 Custom G-String Tenor Ukulele

G-String テナーウクレレ

Classic Custom G-String Tenor Ukulele from 1999 and handcrafted by G-String company president, Derek Shimizu himself. Instruments handcrafted by Derek are highly sought after and offer a level of tone and sustain that only comes with years of experience in fine ukulele luthiery.

This beautiful and rare custom G-String ukulele remains in beautifully refinished condition with a gorgeous Hawaiian curly Koa wood top and flamey quilted maple wood back and sides that has been stained an elegant reddish-brown for aesthetic appeal. Ebony fretboard and Hawaiian curly Koa wood bridge. Black faux top and back binding with b-w-b top purfling on the soundboard and beautiful wood rosette. Honduras mahogany neck. Hawaiian curly Koa wood left and right inlay strips with cocobolo wood center seam accent on the back of the ukulele. Hawaiian curly Koa wood headstock cap a center v-shift in wood grain orientation and ‘Old-style’ Maple wood [G] and logo. Fishman pick-up installed with under separate volume control system. The original tuners left alternate screw placement holes on the back and I have had these addressed in order to accommodate for the new smoother Grover tuners for precise tuning. Vintage style label on inside that predates koa wood plates currently used on G-String Ukuleles. Refinished with a high gloss nitrocellulose finish for a stunning glassy appeal.

This uke offers wonderful tones with the wood combination of the slight punchiness of the Koa wood top with a balanced mid-range and top end section offered by the Maple wood.  Excellent sustain, projection, and clarity all the way up the neck. The action is set well and it’s a dream to play. I would say this is perhaps the best sounding G-String tenor that has come my way thus far. The high notes are wonderful and the deep tones are very chocolatey and complex. It’s currently strung with a low-g configuration. A very rare find and a true player uke that is equally tough to find from one of Hawaii’s most desirable luthiers, Derek Shimizu of G-String Ukulele Co.
