Custom Keith Ogata “PD-5” Ukulele

Beautiful custom Keith Ogata PD-5 semi-acoustic Tenor ukulele. Keith has been building custom ukuleles here in Hawaii for over twelve years and has mastered a design that is both aesthetically appealing and wonderful in tone.

Constructed of a premium Hawaiian mango face, Sapele wood sides, back, and neck, and a Hawaiian Koa fretboard, bridge and curly koa top binding, this custom semi-acoustic ukulele is perfect for quick plug-and-play electronically or acoustically. Professional Grover Mini Rotomatics machine tuners. Abalone shell position markers and curly Maple wood top binding make for an extremely aesthetically pleasing design.  A beautiful and rare piece that rings true the wonderful tones, rich and clear, of Hawaii.

An inspired design of the Gibson line of semi-acoustics and the classic L-5. The thin body, venetian style cutaway and “f” hole lends to the effect and function of the PD-5. A flat-top and split bridge completes the soundboard. The body of the PD-5 is cut from a solid block of wood which gives a nice solid feel to the ukulele. Also unique to this ukulele is the bolt-on neck. It has a piezo bridge pickup setup for an external preamp.

The ‘オ’ on the headstock is the Japanese character for the phonetic sound ‘O’ as in Ogata. This symbol is branded into the headstock of each ukulele and was something passed down to Keith over three generations. The character has always been the symbol  of the family business. Keith’s grandfather, who had initially requested the brand to be made, owned a small business in Hawaii selling handcrafted Japanese ‘Geta’ or ‘wooden sandals’ on which he would burn this symbol into each sandal.  This tradition has continued for three generations beginning with Japanese ‘Geta’ and continuing on in its tradition with beautiful custom ukuleles.
