Bio:
Jayne Henderson began making acoustic guitars with her father, the very talented musician and luthier Wayne Henderson. Jayne, also known as E.J. Henderson, initially intended to pursue a career in environmental law but fell in love with lutherie and chose to follow in her father’s footsteps and become a luthier. Under the tutelage of her father, Jayne has been studying every aspect of her father’s work in order to preserve and carry on his incredible trade while putting her own spin on his traditional aesthetics and methods.
Jayne seeks out most of her wood from local, sustainable sources within a small radius of her home in the Appalachian mountains or from materials located farther away but that are thoughtfully and sustainably harvested. Using these methods and her father’s building techniques, Jayne aspires to change the idea that only exotic endangered wood can make a beautiful, great-sounding instrument.
Specs:
Inspired by the traditional shape of a classic Martin ‘ukulele from the 1920s but with similar features of a rare Style 5 model, this beautiful Custom E.J. Henderson Tenor Ukulele pays homage to a blend of two rare instruments handcrafted by Martin in the 20s and 30s – the Style 5 with shell inlay and the Martin “Shade Top” of the 20s and 30s that was also a rare instrument of the time. The back and sides were handcrafted from a master grade Wenge wood with a tobacco sunburst Adirondack spruce soundboard. Master grade ebony wood headstock plate, fingerboard, and bridge. Ivroid top and back binding in keeping with the overall theme of a vintage custom Martin ukulele. The neck has been carved from Honduras Mahogany wood reinforced with a carbon fiber truss rod for added structural integrity and increased sustain, transferring the energy as it moves through the strings and the neck into the sound box of the instrument with greater stiffness and quicker resolve. Classic abalone ‘E.J. Henderson’ inlay on the headstock with abalone shell snowflake-shaped position markers on 3, 5, 7, 10, 12, and 15 for quick and easy reference. The heel cap also bears a hand-cut piece of abalone shell as a signature mark of E.J. Henderson Ukuleles. Gorgeous black-white-black accent lines on the top and back of the instrument attest to the skills of the luthier and compliment the darker hues of the Wenge with that of the sunburst Adirondack spruce soundboard. L.R. Baggs 5-0 professional pick-up system with strap button on the neck. Professional Grover geared tuners with white buttons for smooth and precise tuning. Professional repair to the back was meticulously done and can only be seen up close with professional lighting.
