Luthier Background.
In 2003 and 2005 Jason Wolverton studied Spanish guitar construction with Jose Romanillos in Siguenza, Spain. It was a great privilege for him not only to learn from such a master, but also to meet such a truly warm person who also happens to be one of the world’s greatest guitar makers. It was Jason’s goal as a luthier to capture the sweet, singing sound of the traditional Spanish guitar and in his opinion, this was the sound of a Torres and Romanillos.
Jason’s experience studying with Romanillos has not only shaped his ideas about the sound of the classical guitar, but also his ideas of visual aesthetics. To behold an instrument of Romanillos is an incredible experience. From a purely visual standpoint, a Romanillos is a remarkable piece of art. Harmony and balance between wood, marquetry, and form; tasteful decoration that augments the natural beauty of the woods used. These elements are all very important to him as a luthier and from this position he undertook his craft at building and has come to be highly respected as a luthier of some of the finest guitars and ukuleles available on the market.
This beautifully handcrafted Custom Wolverton Tenor Ukulele was handcrafted out of the finest materials with comfort, tone, and playability in mind. Handcrafted of a tight grained Madagascar Rosewood back and sides with a back quilted Maple wood center panel and a Lutz spruce soundboard. Lutz is found on the eastern slopes of the British Columbia’s coastal mountains and has the size, strength and stiffness of sitka spruce with the texture and luster of Englemann spruce. It is a tremendous tonewood and is characterized with a solid warm note core with wonderful and balanced clarity. Madagascar Rosewood is often regarded as having tonal qualities similar to that of a tight East-Indian Rosewood sound with a strong and sustained tap tone that provides a nice rich, and complex tone that attributes great depth to the instrument.
The instrument also boasts a musician’s grade Macassar Ebony wood fretboard with gold EVO frets and matching Macassar ebony wood bridge with a newly designed “12 Hole Bridge” system for lacing of strings. Elegant black-white-black top and back purfling, a flamed Maple wood top and back binding, and matching flamed Maple wood end graft and headstock veneer of Maple wood sandwiched between two panels of Madagascar Rosewood in keeping with the theme of the instrument. Spanish Cedar neck adding increased strength and reduced weight to the instrument. 14 fret joint to the body with 20 overall frets.
The instrument also boasts a very intricate Bloodwood, ebony, and rosewood rosette and headstock inlay of wood marquetry work that is absolutely stunning in design and execution. Single Maple wood inlay marker on position 12 and side-of-neck mother-of-pearl inlays on positions 3, 5, 7, 10, and 12 for quick top down reference. Professional open-geared Grover tuners for smooth and precise tuning. Hand-rubbed French polished body with brushed oil neck for a smooth to the touch feel.
The instrument has a wonderful attack with balanced lows and mid-range and crisp highs as well. Excellent projection, sustain, and clarity. I can see why this instrument is regarded as a phenomenal playing ukulele. Highly recommended for both the recreational player or the seasoned musician. ID:#200031
