1890 Joao Gomes Madeiran Rajao
Considered one of the parent instruments, “the father”, of the modern day ukulele, the ukulele is believed to have received its current tuning of G-C-E-A from the Rajao, which is tuned D-G-C-E-A. To my knowledge there are only a few examples of these early historical Madeira rajao remain in existence either in private collections or a few museums throughout the world.
This extremely rare 1890 Historical Joao Gomes Madeira Rajao is a world class collectible over 100 years in age. The instrument originated on the island of Madeira, Portugal and was handcrafted by Joao Gomes, a renowned luthier of island of Madeira in the late 1800s.
A very serious collectible piece which many museums have never seen. The back and sides were handcrafted of either Brazilian Rosewood or Til wood, a native wood to the island of Madeira that has similar properties tonally and in appearance to Brazilian Rosewood. The soundboard is handcrafted of European spruce. It’s very light and there have been some repairs to the body. This is an amazing historical piece with a very unique tone and personality all its own. Made in Madeira, Portugal. ID#:180155
